Ahhh, don’t you love the 20/20 view of hindsight? With so many Detroit Lions fans having their panties in a bunch(my Lion-print panties included) over the Lions current draft selections, I began reminiscing to the past years when the Lions drafts were praised and graded as an A almost across the board by fans and media.
Those were the good old days, it seemed that with each Matt Millen draft pick the excitement level would rise, along with my hopes and dreams.
How did you feel about Matt Millen drafting our savior and future Hall-of-Fame QB Joey “Heisman” Harrington? Weren’t you geeked up to get that blazing fast wide receiver named Charles Rogers out of our own backyard? He was going to be great alongside Roy Williams. Who could defend that offense? Remember?

Who wasn’t excited about the “track team” we were putting together when Millen and the Lions drafted the speedy Boss Bailey in the 2nd round of that same draft? Speed kills had become the mantra in the D! Woo hooo!
Let’s not forget about Kalimba Edwards (known as Kalimbust Edwards in my circle of friends), Mike Williams, and 2nd round “steal” Teddy Lehman!
Most of us were sooooooo excited at these draft selections, Mel Kiper and the other talking heads patted their buddy Millen on the back until they left bruises on the guy, Millen was the draft day guru!
But then the players had to actually play. WHOMP WHOMP….
All we got from all that excitement and blazing speed was 0-16, a decade of failure and Chuck Rogers blazing weed and burning more blunts than defenders.
What’s my point?
We as fans and media don’t know crap, that’s my point.
Don’t get me wrong, this is fun and I’ll never stop giving my opinion and you shouldn’t either, but let’s remember to not close our minds to the possibility that we could be wrong.

Martin Mayhew’s drafts have been considerably less loved ON DRAFT DAY than Matt Millen’s drafts, mainly because Lions fans had become so beaten down that it became hard to not be a huge skeptic of EVERYTHING.
Shoot, I didn’t even want Mayhew to stay hired with the Lions because he might have gotten too close and got some Millen-juice on him. I didn’t even want the next GM to have an “M” in his name and this guy has the SAME INITIALS as Matt Millen!!! Lol… I’m kidding(not really).
That’s how mentally bruised we had become as Detroit Lions fans, even the drafting of Matt Stafford was halfway booed at Ford Field because Aaron Curry was seen as the “can’t miss” prospect and we didn’t want another Joey Harrington. (I loved the pick BTW)
The proof has been in the pudding with Mayhew and Schwartz, with the team getting better and more talented every year.
So even though many of us were not enamored with the selection of Riley Reiff, I and many others are still scratching our heads with the surprise 2nd round selection of WR Ryan Broyles and nobody is really jumping for joy over the Lions’ drafting of Dwight Bentley.
These players will actually hit the field soon and become Lions players, so I’m going to wait for my serving of pudding and see what proof is in it. I trust that Martin Mayhew knows what he’s doing even if I don’t agree while he’s doing it.
What do you think?

I'm ok with the Bentley pick, and the Lewis pick in the fourth round is the best pick in this draft yet.
This is a good article. I liked the Reiff pick. I didn't like the Broyle pick, or many of the others because I felt like there were many better player still on the board. I still think it'll work out though. Can't wait to see them all play.
I wonder why the lions take a WR so early in the draft. What about DB`s
