  • You Can’t Fault Mayhew For Choosing Highly-Talented “Risk” Players

When a basketball team is down by 10 points with 20 seconds left in the game they usually have their best shooters chuck up 3-point shots, not because it’s the highest percentage shot to take but because they have nothing to lose and they are SUNK if they don’t hit a couple big ones.

Martin Mayhew is this Lions organization’s best shooter and he chucked up some 3-pointers in his own way by selecting a few highly-talented players with red flags hanging off of them.

I for one, do not blame the Detroit Lions general manager for doing so. When you’re rebuilding a team that lacked more talented football players than nearly the entire league for about a decade and finally bottoms out at 0-16 you are not put in the normal position of being able to play it safe.

DETROIT Lions - OCTOBER 10: Titus Young

Martin Mayhew didn’t get this team to 10-6 and the playoffs by playing it safe and making sure that all of his draft picks were boy scouts. He made sure that every player he selected was a superior player in his opinion.

BPA stands for best player available not best person available.

Just like that player at the end of the basketball game chucking up 3-pointers, he doesn’t need all of the shots to fall he just needs enough of the shots to fall in order to win.

It’s become painfully obvious to Lions fans that smiley-faced Nick Fairley is a freakin’ idiot and I hope he learns how to become less of one, Mikel Leshoure and  Johnny Culbreath have both taken behaving stupidly to a professional level and instead need to just become professional football players, Titus Young is a hot-headed idiot with frequently bad haircuts and he needs to get his act together on both accounts.

With that being said, I myself was an idiot in my early 20′s as well and I straightened up pretty well, so there’s a chance. The Detroit Lions just need a couple of these guys to hit big and that’s the risk that Mayhew took.

It’s also to be taken note that now that the team has a good roster built up, this year’s draft was alot cleaner character-wise. I don’t know if that’s by coincidence or not and I don’t know if that’s gonna be a good thing or not.

If guys can’t play football who cares how high their character this is? This isn’t the “win a date with my daughter” show, it’s the NFL.

So we’ll just have to wait and see how risky Martin Mayhew is with his draft selections in the future as far as character is concerned. But really….

After quickly moving on from the historically embarrassing 0-16 season to the NFL playoffs last year and now being a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the minds of fans and national pundits, Mayhew’s drafts have proven to be far more reward than risk.
