Something happened today in the #20 Lions lounge on Facebook that really ticked me off.

It brought back memories of all the hater fans that I had arguments with over the last 12 years or so while I tried in futility to defend my beloved Detroit Lions against friendly fire.

Back when I had these battles, it wasn’t that I was trying to convince anybody that the Lions were good because they weren’t and I knew it. I just couldn’t understand for the life of me how someone could call themselves a true Detroit Lions fan, but be oh so happy to throw dirt on the Lions and laugh and jeer at their own hometown team.

But never mind the past, here’s what happened today in the Lounge…

One of my fellow Lions fans posed the question “how many wins do you predict the Lions to get this season?” Now of course, having over 800 diehard Lions fans in the #20 Detroit Lions Lounge the answers were quite predictable for the most part. You’re going to see the majority of the guesses and approximations be on the high side, most predictions came in between 10 and 13 wins.

Yes, we are a bunch of slappies but if there is ever a year to be a slappy it’s THIS year!

One member of the Lounge, created a bit of a stir though. One of the members (who shall remain nameless) predicted that the Lions will go 6-10 this year because they have the “worse secondary in the league” and because “these are the Lions.”

What the what???

I can half-way accept the doubt about the secondary, even though saying they will be the worst in the league is reaching, the thing that got my goat was the quote about “these are the Lions”.

This right here folks is the type of “Detroit Lions fan” that I have problems with. The self-defeating, self-loathing “Lions fans”.

What does anybody mean when they say “these are the Lions”?

Is that supposed to be a bad thing? Somebody clue me in…

Is this not the team that NFL icon Barry Sanders played for? Is this not the franchise that started Thanksgiving Day football games? Is this not the franchise that won championships before the Super Bowl was even invented? What do these guys mean when they say “these are the Lions”? The Detroit Lions are a storied NFL franchise and these people act as if the Matt Millen era defines this franchise’s ENTIRE existence. Pfffft!

You especially have to love the “fans” (and by love, I mean despise), who get all butt hurt because the Lions didn’t draft a player that they wanted them to draft or sign a player that they wanted the Lions to sign so now they want the Lions to fail so that they are proven right in all their wisdom.

That’s REAAAAAL logical, isn’t it?

There are literally guys who are still hating on Matt Stafford, because of the knockdown drag-out fights they had tryin’ to make the case that we should draft LB Aaron Curry instead of “the next Joey Harrington”. UN-BE-LIEVABLE but true!

There are tons of different types of fans out there and I don’t expect everyone to agree that the Lions will be good every year, but can we at least be realistic?

I thought I had a problem with all the new bandwagon fans jumping on-board but in reality, it’s not that bad. It’s actually kind of cool to see the Lions have bandwagon fans again, those guys haven’t been around since Barry retired.

But irrational, illogical Lions hater “fans” just chap my butt.

For all Lions haters who are afraid to enjoy this team’s present and future successes. Please go find another team. The word “fan”is short for fanatic, if you think this team is destined to fail because “these are the Lions”, you are not even realistic about how good this team is, a far cry from a fanatic of the team or a TRUE Lions fan.

For all the true Lions fans out there, how do you deal with these clowns? Do you just ignore them or do you give them a piece of your mind?

If you happen to be one of those hater “Lions fans” please help me to understand how your brain works and how you make sense to even yourself. Whatever, I don’t really care to know. Just know this…. GO LIONS!!!!!!
