  • Jerry Rice’s Opinion Doesn’t Change Megatron’s Reality

This is the last year for a semi-valid opinion to be spoken in regards to Calvin Johnson, at least with any shred of credibility, so please enjoy it all former NFL wide receivers turned commentator.

As opposed to the outrage and fury that I felt when Chris Carter opened up his loud, country-bumpkin sounding pie-hole that sits under a protruding beak-nose. I am actually happy that Jerry Rice has now set himself up to be shown wrong once and for all.

This is a bit different for me because Jerry Rice was more respectful of Calvin Johnson in his assessment of his top five wide receivers and I think that has a lot to do with the way that I feel about his opinion.  The all time greatest wide receiver in NFL history (for now) has ranked Calvin Johnson as only the second-best receiver in NFL football today behind Larry Fitzgerald. Fine….that’s his opinion, but that’s all it is.

The great thing about this is that you know that after this year, there will be absolutely no question in anybody’s mind as to who the greatest wide receiver in the game is today. Continue reading “Jerry Rice’s Opinion Doesn’t Change Megatron’s Reality” »

Lions In Dire Need Of Contract Restructuring To Keep Their Own Free Agents

2/14/2012 - Today Lions fans got a chance to get up close and personal with Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand by way of phone conference. I myself listened in as Tom Lewand held the conference call with Detroit Lions season ticket holders while Dan Miller mediated/hosted.

Although let me be clear, I’m quite the idiot and mistakenly hung up on the conference call halfway through it and didn’t know what number to call in order to be reconnected (the Lions call the ticket-holders to start the conference.)

That’s what I get for trying to listen to a conference call and talk with other Lions fans on my Lions Detroit Facebook page at the same time.   :-/

Anyway, enough about my buffoonery and on to the conference call with Lewand.

Detroit Lions Fans HATE Winning – (Some Of Them)

    3

    Posted on : 12-02-2012 | By : Lee Torre | In : Personalities

Some “Lions fans” really chap my butt! AARRRGH!!!

I started this Detroit Lions blog to be able to celebrate and talk about our favorite team together as fellow Detroit Lions fanatics and that’s exactly what we will continue doing.

With the team’s recent success though, an interesting thing is happening, as I involve myself in many of the different Detroit Lions fan communities(forums and websites) I run into some of the same disturbing sentiments and statements, it’s happening far too much to be an isolated incident. Let me give you a sampling of the tom-foolery….

“We should TRADE CALVIN JOHNSON for (whomever) and (however many draft picks!)”

“We could get a (whatever round draft pick) for Brandon Pettigrew”

“We should cut (insert productive player that contributed to this year’s success)”

Those statement are just a VERY small sampling the type asinine comments I read ever single day and I just have one major question to ask to you trade, slash and burn type fans.

Do you hate winning that much???

It’s like some Lions fans have Stockholm syndrome and have become so accustomed to the losing that they don’t know what to do with themselves without it, they want their beloved captor back. (Anyone got Matt Millen’s cell number?)

Now I understand, opinions are opinions and everyone has one just like everyone has…ummm… earholes?

But this idiocy has to stop! For ANY FAN that would trade a GENERATIONAL TALENT away like Calvin “Megatron” Johnson away for draft picks, I just don’t know what to say for you.

What exactly do you want to trade for? Trade away a once-in-a-generation type PHENOM for A POTENTIAL talent or talents? Yeah, that makes about as much sense as paying a hundred dollars for a lottery ticket that pays off $100 IF you win. Brilliant!

In case you haven’t noticed we are WINNING BECAUSE OF THE PLAYERS WE HAVE on this team right now! Yes we need to add pieces, yes trades will be made at some point as they have in the past. But talking about “robbing” other teams of players and draft picks for our ALL-PRO superstars is beyond ignorant.

Please stop it, you are embarrassing yourselves and showing that you can’t even see a winner when you have one right in front of your face. This Detroit Lions team is on the verge of being truly great and for a loooong time. We have some of the youngest stars in the league growing together as a team under a bright young coach. Do you mind letting them win or are you more comfortable in the dungeon?

Another thing this ticks me off is how people try to prove their point about a current player on the roster not being as good as they are perceived. You will see these arguments all over the place in Lions website and forums and it’s normal, but why, in trying to prove your point about a player not being as good as everybody thinks they are do you have to HATE the player on your own team? Just to prove your point? Your point is THAT important huh?

Fans start off with a simple statement “I think (whomever) sucks”, OK fine. Inevitably though, there will be someone that has an opposing view and the debate begins, next thing you know you’re degrading and downgrading any accomplishment the player has ever had and talking about how you saw the players wife at the mall and how she smells like onions, it’s ridiculous.

Even talking about an opposing teams players and family in such a way would be in bad taste and usually false or exaggerated, but these are your own teams players. Players on a GOOD TEAM and one headed towards being great. Stop having such a loser’s mentality, all those years of complaining about losing can be put away now, it’s a new day, a new era. We will have plenty to cheer and be excited about as long as none of you ever becomes the GM and trade it all away!

BUT, with all that being said, I know that nothing is going to change, I just needed to rant for a little bit. Smart fans will be smart and dumb fans will be dumb, so is life… GO LIONS!!!

Can Calvin Johnson or Stafford Surpass The Greatness of Barry Sanders?

    2

    Posted on : 08-02-2012 | By : Lee Torre | In : Lions Opinions

Today was an interesting day, if I can say anything I can say that Detroit Lions fans are a passionate crowd about their team and their “guys”. I started a little bit of an argument today over at the mlive forums when I introduced the idea that Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford have a very good chance of becoming more iconic in Detroit Lions football lore than the great, great, GREAT(3 times for emphasis) Barry Sanders.

Wow, you would have thought I called somebodies mom fat or something! (well I probably did but that’s beside the point, lol!)

Most Lions fans were having NO PARTS OF IT, it was hilarious! But is the premise that far-fetched? I think not.

By nature almost, Barry Sanders is BY FAR my favorite Detroit Lion of all time and he’s known as arguably the greatest Lion the ever played the game of Football. Barry Sanders is the reason I was able to stay loyal to the Lions throughout the Millen decade of despair, Detroit Lions football was absolutely epic to witness when #20 hit the field. Every time Barry Sanders touched the ball I would stop breathing for a split second because he made me forget to breathe, I was too busy waiting for the amazing to happen and it usually did. I’ve never seen anyone like him.

So when I pose the question of whether his greatness can be eclipsed it seems almost like a Lions fan cardinal sin, but it’s not. The reason that I believe Megatron and Stafford have an opportunity to pass Barry in greatness is because they are just that good. Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are once-in-a-generation types of talent, it’s that simple.

Barring injury, Calvin Johnson will go down as the greatest wide receiver to have ever played the game, the man is literally playing on another level than the competition. What other wide receiver have you ever seen that gets bracketed at the goal line to the point that it looks like the gunner positions in punt coverage? You haven’t seen it, only with CJ because he’s that special of a player.

On the mlive forums I heard everything from the idiotic “Barry makes more phenomenal plays in one season than these two will in their careers combined” to the true “Barry Sanders is still seen as one of the best at his position EVER”.

People get too emotional when considering Barry Sanders and the pleasure he brought the entire NFL on Sundays, this is about the here and now and the same statement made about Barry’s rank amongst his position all-time will be said about Calvin Johnson. The difference? Megatron will be hailed as the greatest at his position ever, not only top 5.

Now Matt Stafford obviously has more to prove, he needs to still stay healthy in which is as likely as any other quarterback in the NFL, he had fluke injuries that painted him in a bad light amongst crybaby fans that probably wanted the Lions to draft Aaron Curry and are just desperate to be right for once in their lives. The kids is as tough as nails and just a true winner. Throwing to Calvin Johnson AND being supremely talented adds up to a future of AMAZING plays, big game victories and chances at Super Bowl victories.

With spectacular plays being equal, the winning will propel these two current Lions to the head of the class in regards to legendary status in Detroit Lions history as well as the NFL record books.

What do you think, am I right or am I right?

And with all that having been said…. “Bar-ry, Bar-ry, Bar-ry!!!”

Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford Wins Quarterback of The Year from NFL Alumni!

    4

    Posted on : 07-02-2012 | By : Lee Torre | In : Lions News

Wow. Screw the Pro Bowl, Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is making up for the snub in a big way. He may have missed out on the honor of playing in the most unwatchable football game of the year but he’s getting his fair share of respect from the prestigious NFL Alumni association.

Matt Stafford beat out Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers for the honor of being named Quarterback Of The Year at the 30th annual Player of the Year Awards.

It’s good to see that Matthew Stafford is starting to reap the benefits of his league-elite talent. This award will go nicely with the Comeback Player of The Year award he just won. The last couple of years have been filled with loud mouth hacks doubting him, calling him “Glassford” and calling him a bust, now he’s showing that the Detroit Lions finally have “the guy”. Can you believe it? It’s really happening in Detroit!

In his acceptance speech he thanked his coaches and teammates.

“Wow, this is an awesome honor – I appreciate it,” Stafford continues. “Thank you, first off, to the alumni for voting for me. There are a lot of great quarterbacks that could have won this award and definitely deserved it as well. Any time an award like this is given out, it’s an individual award, but really, it’s won by the team. I couldn’t have done it without the teammates and the coaching staff in Detroit. I’m just happy to be part of that team and be part of this.”

Lion fans, this the first of many, many awards and accolades for this kid, we are watching the beginning of GREATNESS!

Calvin Johnson Beat Out For WR of The Year?

Not to get greedy or anything, but how the heck does Hakeem Nicks win Wide Receiver of The Year over Calvin “Megatron” Johnson? That’s plain retarded. I’m sorry. Calvin Johnson is the most unstoppable force at WR in the game hands down!

This is typical bias towards New York teams and athletes. The craziest part is that Hakeem Nicks might not even be the best receiver on his on own team. What did he do make a huge donation to the NFL Alumni or something? That’s some straight, uncut bullcrap. Wow, that rant just felt so right.

OK here are the rest of the winners…..
